In an iron, the water is heated directly in the iron's tank. The steam is then discharged through the small holes in the soleplate. Irons are compact and inexpensive but have a relatively small water tank.

In a steam iron, the water is heated in the base, not the iron. This results in a higher steam output and a lighter iron. Steam irons therefore have a larger tank, a lighter iron but are larger. Do you often iron large quantities of laundry? Then a steam iron is ideal.
