While everyone appreciates the impressive look and immersive feeling of a large TV screen, it's important to note that a screen that's too large might prove to be cumbersome.So, what is the ideal TV screen size for you? How do you calculate the diagonal of your new screen? What size should you choose for a 3m setback: 55", 65", or 75 inches? HiFi Luxembourg offers three criteria to consider as well as a simple method to determine the ideal dimension of your future TV.

Calculate the ideal TV size for your viewing distance

For a 4K TV, the ideal distance between you and the screen is between 1.2 and 1.5 times the screen diagonal. In practice, divide your viewing distance by 1.5 to get the recommended size, and by 1.2 for the maximum size if you want a true cinema-like experience.

Example: which TV size for a 3 m viewing distance?

Convert the distance to centimetres: 3 m = 300 cm.
Divide by 1.5: 300 ÷ 1.5 = 200 cm diagonal.
Convert to inches (1 inch = 2.54 cm): 200 ÷ 2.54 ≈ 79 inches.

A 75" or 77" 4K TV is therefore ideal for a 3 m viewing distance. For a more immersive experience, you can go up to 98".

How far should you sit from a 65" 4K TV?

Convert the diagonal to centimetres: 65 × 2.54 = 165 cm.
Multiply by 1.2 and by 1.5: 165 × 1.2 ≈ 2 m and 165 × 1.5 ≈ 2.50 m.

So sit between 2 m and 2.50 m from a 65" 4K TV.

What about a Full HD TV?

On a Full HD screen, pixels are more visible up close. Allow 1.5 to 2.5 times the diagonal: for a 40" Full HD TV (102 cm), sit between 1.50 m and 2.50 m away.Tip: the screen size is almost always included in the model reference. For example, the “65” in the TCL 65C89L or the LG 65QNED86B6 stands for a 65-inch diagonal.

Choosing the right resolution for your new TV

Full HD, 4K or 8K: which resolution for your viewing distance?

Resolution determines how close you can sit before you start to see individual pixels. The higher it is, the closer you can sit to the screen and the larger the diagonal you can choose.

Why can you sit closer to a 4K TV?

For the same diagonal, a 4K screen has 4 times as many pixels as a Full HD screen. The pixels are therefore smaller and more tightly packed. This is pixel density, measured in pixels per inch (ppi): on a 65" TV, it rises from about 34 ppi in Full HD to 68 ppi in 4K. Up close, a 4K picture stays sharp, whereas a Full HD screen would look pixelated.

Who is an 8K TV for?

An 8K TV displays 16 times as many pixels as a Full HD TV. It really comes into its own on very large screens (75" and above) viewed from close up. Native 8K content is still rare: the TV upscales 4K and Full HD images to make the most of its panel.

Big screen, small space: fitting your TV into your room

Before you buy, make sure the TV will actually fit. The diagonal tells you nothing about the real width of the screen or the footprint of its stand.

How do you measure the space for your TV?

Width: a 16:9 screen is about 0.87 times its diagonal. A 65" TV is therefore around 1.44 m wide, excluding the frame.
Height: allow about half the diagonal, i.e. 81 cm for a 65" TV.
Stand: check how far apart the feet are. On some models they sit at the very ends, so the TV unit must be almost as wide as the screen.
Depth: worth checking if the TV will stand on a piece of furniture.
Ventilation: leave some free space around the TV, following the manufacturer's recommendations.

How high should you place your TV?

For optimal comfort, the centre of the screen should be at eye level when seated, usually around 1 m from the floor for a standard sofa. A screen mounted too high, above a fireplace for example, makes you tilt your head back and strains your neck.

Save space with a wall mount

A wall mount frees up your TV unit and makes a large screen look less imposing. A swivel model also lets you adjust the viewing angle wherever you are in the room. Check its VESA compatibility and maximum load against your TV.

What size TV for a bedroom?

In a bedroom, the viewing distance is often shorter, around 1.5 to 2 m: a 40" to 55" screen is suitable in most cases. Mounted on the wall facing the bed, it stays clearly visible without cluttering the room.
